This really takes you back to the 90s when record stores were still a vibrant thing. Chris is a newcomer to the titular record store, Vinyl Destination (great name) that's run by Irene (coolest adult Chris knows) and staffed by goth girl Dolores, Gabby the cutest girl ever and Kennedy (who doesn't feel like a token character of color but definitely the token straight person). It's the Mystery Van crew if they were all ladies working in music. Chris knows something weird is going on at night (and while I was hoping for something paranormal alas).
She's taken into the group's confidence early (a point of contention for D) They're a fight club and in fact there are feminist fight clubs solving mysteries and fighting for justice world wide and Chris can't wait to join.
This volume has two separate story arcs. The first and longest is the fact that bands are disappearing (or at least members) Chris is over the moon because her favorite band Stegosour is coming to the shop but its lead singer Rosie Riot has gone missing. The team has to find her.
The second story is the vague villain (he could have been better drawn) is now out to stop the sites allowing people to steal music and download it for free (boy do I remember this) and wants to monetize the Y2K nightmare as he does so. I can almost see his point about the theft of music but Y2K had it happened, yeah a lot less so. It's up to the ladies to stop him.
It has well plotted story ideas. The art is amazing, truly shines. Chris is a well drawn character. the others a bit less so but they are there and interesting. I'm also glad that it ended on a note where more could happen but also it's fully wrapped up its mysteries so more isn't needed. In fact, I'm glad it's not an ongoing comic because I think it would wear thin quickly. It's definitely worth picking up.
