What Feasts at Night by T. KingfisherMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
This was another fun sworn soldier novella but not quite as good as the first in my opinion. Easton has gone home to Gallacia with their friend/mentor Angus to their family's lodge in the woods outside of a rural town. When they get there, the lodge and barn haven't been opened up because the caretaker has died and no one in town will talk about it. In fact, Easton can barely find anyone willing to come and work for them, just a grumpy old widow and her grandson. And she needs the place spruced up because Miss Potter is coming for a visit.
Since it's short and I don't want to spoil anything, we'll go with what's in the blurb, there's a breath-stealing monster from folklore (one found in many cultures) This novella is set more firmly in the real world than book one felt even though Gallacia is fictional.
I did have a few issues with this, namely it seemed oddly slow to ramp up the tension, you can see the framework for it but it just didn't feel very tense to me. And Miss Potter felt much less essential than in book one. Honestly, if she hadn't been there I wouldn't have missed her much.
Easton on the other hand remains sarcasm royalty. Loved their sarcastic wit and I did enjoy this. I just wish there was...I don't know, a little more horror maybe.
