I ran across this 90s era cozy mystery series in my attempts to find a book for my read a book in all 50 states challenge and now I have Alabama covered for the next few years at least. I did enjoy this one even if I wanted to slap the sisters more often than not.

Patricia Anne is a retired school teacher nicknamed Mouse by her look before you leap sister Mary Alice. Both ladies should be enjoying their retirement and their grandkids but the married way too many times Mary Alice has made an impulse buy, the Skoot-n-Boot country western bar (in the mid 90s when this was written, CW line dancing had blown up so really this would have been a decent investment).

However, Ed whom she bought it from, ends up dead in the club's wishing well with his throat cut and Patricia Anne fears a former favorite student of hers, Henry, might get blamed because of his past (that she just learned about). Detective Reuse actually doesn't seem to blame him much so some of this is in the sisters' heads and bonus, Mary Alice's daughter is a lawyer so there is some guidance there.

The mystery spins out well and the sisters are engaging. I was a little annoyed by the times Patricia Anne (as this is a first person pov story) says I'll tell the cops about something and doesn't. At least she did half the time because it's obvious almost anyone would tell the police these things though she needs prompting at times. I did really like the relationship Patricia Anne has with her husband. It definitely feels like they've been married for decades with those bursts of I love this guy to the why the hell am I married swings.

Patricia Anne ends the story wanting the Skoot bulldozed. She might have a point. I will be reading more of this.
