Mister Impossible by Maggie StiefvaterMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
I have been thinking about what I want to say about Mister Impossible for weeks now but I can’t escape the feeling that this should have been a duology. A few other reviewers said this felt like filler and sadly yes. Worse than that Ronan, who should be the star of the book, is not nearly as interesting as Matthew, Declan and Jordan.
Hennessy’s endless inferiority complex about being only to bring out lace and her nihilism is wearying. Bryde and Ronan’s inability to see what Adam saw so clearly is also rather annoying, sorry. Adam felt wasted in this (and I wonder how much of that might have been the influence of rabid, harrying fans who put so much pressure on the relationship that Stiefvater scrapped the rest of her ideas for this universe). Adam could simply have been a friend. As a boyfriend he’s a non-entity really.
I think, for me, the issue was the plot is ‘too big.’ The Raven cycle had a more intimate plot affecting mostly just them. This one is a save/doom the world plot and it just feels like too much. By contrast, Matt and Jordan just trying to stay alive without their dreamers is more intimate and endlessly more interesting to me. Carmen’s storyline, however, is annoying. How many ways can someone justify murder?
I didn’t expect the twist at the end so that was nice at least. I am wondering if Ronan will manage to get the people he cares about killed because of his actions as he listens to no one. Of course the elephant in the room is if the Earth is healed and the Dreamers can have more energy is it a good thing? Knowing what’s in my head when I dream, I’m going with no.
Will I read on? Yes in spite of my disappointment in this book, I have to get the last book.
