Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins Volume III by Jody HouserMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
I definitely feel like I rated up a bit on this one. It was a solid 3.5 because it felt so unfinished which okay I get it, these are after all bundled comic books and finishing this arc would probably have taken this to the doorstop omnibus size.
The team has a little extra cash - barely - and the desire for some off time so they head to the winter festival in Westrun. Remember the barely having extra cash thing? Yeah doesn't last so they enter a free for all cage fight which doesn't add a whole lot to the story. It doesn't really begin until some winter elemental freezes the town (and some of the team) and the remaining team has to put a stop to her.
But that's just the beginning of the mystery. Who sent her? Why frame a friend of the group? What will this person do next? We do get some solid character development for Vax and Vex in this including a big familial reveal. Percy ended up the weakest character development wise. Between last volume and this we don't know why he stay with the team beyond they rescued him from prison and he has minimal impact on the team dynamics (yes I do realize his story arc is important in the animation but this was supposed to be setting up the team as a team so it would have been nice to see why he was there).
The art remains outstanding, just really top tier.
