The Last Halloween: Children by Abby HowardMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
You might be misled by the cover. It doesn't look particularly scary but this is definitely not for kids horror. Speaking of which kids get hurt and/or killed in this graphic novel.
It has some interesting ideas. Everyone has their very own monster. These and other monsters are kept in the darkness, kept in check by a paranormal human, the Phagocyte. But someone has harmed him horribly leaving him hospitalized but alive so his son can't take over the role. Monsters now own the earth.
Ten year old Mona just wanted to spend Halloween with her non-binary father (who likes wearing her mother's clothes to feel close to her after her death) but they're going out to a party where a psychic is going to talk to the dead for her guests. Mona finds herself terrified, on the run in the woods and found by a ragtag band of kid monsters including a young vampire boy (whose centuries as a child has done bad things to his brain), a ghoul addicted to her phone and Robert, a living doll.
Mostly they are just trying to stay alive and to find the Phagocyte's son and make sure he is safe so he can take over his role.
It's a scary, complicated story. I need to go find the website hosting it as I want to see more. You feel very sorry for Mona who is just a kid and not ready to save the world.
